It was a bit of a grim and windy day today, though a bit warmer than it has been lately so I decided to have muck around with my little quadcopter, the Blade mQX. As I've said before, it flies surprising well for such a little machine, even when it's a bit windy like it was today. I mounted a little, cheap DV camera at the front to get a little bit of onboard footage. It's not very good really, very wobbly (jello effect). I didn't notice until afterwards, but the bit of plastic I glued the camera onto has a crack in it, which would greatly increase the vibrations. However, this wasn't meant to be an attempt at world-class filming, we were just larking about, so I put some of the onboard wobble footage in the video just to add an extra dimension. Also, because the mQX quadcopter is so small and sprightly, it's fairly difficult to film from the ground - turning into a small dot very quickly once you get some height, which you must do if you want to attempt a barrel roll or loop. I did a few loops and rolls, simply because you can - mostly because you don't care if it crashes, because it's actually pretty crash resistant and because it's very cheap in comparison to larger quadcopters and hexacopters etc. I think next time I might mount the camera on a bit of foam directly beneath the centre, and put some tiny bits of foam under each leg to lift off the ground a bit to clear my miniature onboard camera. |
