York Morrisons Chimney Hexa2 Aerial Video

There's a couple of buildings in York that I've been thinking of as my Everests to conquer, one it York Minster and another is the very high chimney on Foss Islands Road that is currently owned by Morrisons supermarket.

So today, on a whim, I decided to go and try to fly over the top of the chimney which stands at over 180 feet or 55 metres tall.

I'd spent all day tinkering with my Mikrokopter Hexa2 because it was raining outside, but at 4:30pm the sun came out and the weather changed for the better. This aerial video attempt has been in the back of my mind for ages, and I always thought that early Sunday evening would be a good time to try as the store is closed so there won't be as many people and cars around to worry about.

I gave it an hour and got there at 5:30pm. As I thought the car park was pretty empty so I was good to go.

The only obstacles really are a lot of lamp posts and other poles that you get in modern car parks, but once you're up high enough there's nothing in the way of obstructions other than the massive Grade II listed chimney that I'd come to film.

I flew the entire mission FPV (first person view) so I could see what the camera was looking at, which turned out pretty good as I'd also tweaked my camera mount so I could tilt it downwards to look at the chimney from above.

The only niggling snag was that I had the camera mount tilted to one side, which I did notice when I took off but didn't want to waste flight time coming back down again to correct it. This meant I had to straighten the video on my computer and zoom it in a bit, which degrades the quality a little bit.

However, I was totally thrilled to have pulled this aerial video off. I had a massive adrenalin rush and couldn't stop laughing in the car afterwards because I was so happy from the experience - looking through my FPV googles, soaring through the air like a bird and being in complete control over what I look at and where I go.
