This is my third FPV (first person view) flight with the Hexa XL mounted Hoverfly Pro flight controller. This aerial video in another, like the last, in what I like to call my 'how we used to live archive' series. That is, something people can watch in 20 or 30 years to see what's changed in our local environment since 2012. There isn't too much to report or add to what I've said about the Hoverfly Pro flight controller in previous posts. There are a few little glitches, or wobbles, in the footage here or there that I've been blaming on the camera mount, but have heard that Hoverfly are releasing new software that will smooth out these wobbles. I guess the trickiest, or at least the scariest element of this aerial video in flying over the river and back. It's not very likely that I'd lose it in the river, though I did hear that Thames Valley Police lost their drone in the river last year. It would be quite a blow to lose a few thousand quids' worth of gear in the River Ouse. Still, it's always a fear when you fly near water. I did in fact lose one of my first, much cheaper drones in a lake so it's always on my mind. The winds were quite fast higher up in this video, but the powerful motors and Hoverfly Pro board seem to cope with that quite well, which is a good thing because it does seem to get very high very quickly. In fact I do sometimes panic a bit at higher altitudes because it's hard to tell how quickly, or not, you are descending, with the temptation being to come down quicker and possibly lose control. I'm thinking I might fit on OSD (on screen display) to this permanently, so I get a readout on my goggles showing me how high I am and how quickly I'm going up or down. I will get much better control this way as sometimes it's hard to tell if you're rising or falling when you're higher up. |
