Yesterday the weather was very grey, it had rained a lot and I'd pretty much given up on the prospect of getting any aerial photography done. However, there was a break in the rain, though the clouds stayed behind, so I decided to have a fly over the archaeology down the bottom of my street, partly because I wanted to try out a new camera mount I'd fitted for the first time and partly because we thought it mgiht rain again at any minute, so we could rush back inside before anything got too wet. One of the best things about living in the centre of a medieval city is that 'at the end of the street' is usually pretty interesting, no matter which street you decide to explore. Hungate is a new development in York, where they intend to build some new houses and shops. Before the main building commences though, there is an archaeological dig taking place. This is pretty common in a city that's been around for thousands of years, where one would not want to waste the opportunity to explore the earth beneath our feet before someone else builds on it once more. This aerial video focuses on the dig itself, which you can see if full off water from the rain and why no one is digging there on this day, and the surrounding area between the river Foss and Stonebow and Peasholme Green in York. The video quality is not perfect because the sky was very grey, making it almost dark, but it's nice to see different colours sometimes when most people, including me, prefer to film exlcusively on sunny days. |
