I made a short aerial video of Huntington All Saints Church in York almost four months ago and someone wanted to use it in a little film they are making. They mentioned it was a bit wobbly but would like to use it anyway. Having looked at my old aerial video I realised it is very wobbly indeed: Old Huntington Church Video and decided I wanted to do a remake to compare. I have become so used to my new equipment and developing skills over time that I had not realised how much better my more recent aerial videos are. I mean I thought the picture quality was getting better because I'd bought better cameras, but I honestly thought the smoothness and steadiness had been pretty constant for a while now. However, comparing my aerial videos from a couple of months ago to now I can see a massive difference. I guess that's the thing with this type of thing - everytime you go out and create a new film, you come back and see where you can make little tweaks to make it better the next time. So, from one film to the next, you don't notice that much difference - but when you compare films from months apart you're seeing the results of many tweaks. For example, the new Huntington church aerial video below is miles ahead of the first attempt, but there are still tweaks I need to do to get rid of those little fluttering shakes here and there. These flutters were mainly caused by having a camera mount that was not really designed for the camera I was using. The plate the camera rested on was a bit too narrow for the long camcorder so, combined with the wind, it made the camera wobble a bit in places. |
