I decided to have a go at flying the length of a relatively narrow street, St Andrewgate, in York. Looking at the video, viewers might not think the street is all that narrow but it feels a lot tighter when you're trying to fly a quadcopter along it while being aware that people can come along at any time. In fact the two girls in the video came along from behind me and walked right underneath the quadcopter without even noticing it - they were talking to each other and sending text messages at the same time. This is in contrast to the woman near the end of the video who saw the quadcopter and stopped to take a picture of it. The main difficulties to contend with were my nervousness because of the unknown factor of people that may come along, and the breeze blowing down the street against the direction of the flying quadcopter. Cars can get part way down the street but it is not a through road and it was evening time so the street was fairly quiet. As you can see, where I got to the end of the street, overlooking King's Square, cars were coming by and there were a lot more people around. I was a bag of nerves and adrenalin by then so I set it down. If I had more confidence, and someone with me to watch out for cars, I would have flown above the square too and had a good look around. I must say though that the Gaui 330X S excels at this sort of thing. It's small size and light weight make it ideal for tight spots and portability. I would not try this, for instance, with my xAircraft X650 which is about four times bigger and, therefore, harder to control in tight spaces and a scarier prospect for flying around people with its greater size and larger props. |
