I went to see my brother today, who lives in Acomb on the other side of town, and happened to have my hexacopter in the car from the day before along with a few fully charged batteries, so I decided to show him what it flies like as he'd never seen it before. However, we spent so long chatting about this and that, because I don't get to see him anywhere near as often as I'd like, that it was almost dark by the time we got around to going outside to fly the hexacopter. Still, it was interesting nonetheless. For one I was curious to see what the footage would be like from my camcorder at night time as I'd never tried it before, plus it was also an opportunity to see what the FPV (First Person View) camera worked like in the dark as it's sort of a night vision camera. I flew the DJI Wookong M hexacopter up and down the street and above the roofs a bit while my brother, nephew and my brother's friend took turns looking through the FPV goggles to see what the night vision was like. It turns out the FPV camera is pretty clear at night, almost like daytime only in black and white, and you can see in the video what the camcorder footage is like. This is on a pretty dark street with only one or two street lights and a lot of dark areas. Without the flashing light of the Wookong flight controller I don't think I would have been able to fly line of sight because it was too dark, especially by the time we finished. I'm quite excited about the prospect of FPV flights at night with the night vision capabilities of the little CCD camera, and filming where there's a little bit more lighting in town where I live so the camcorder footage is clearer. Having said that, the darkness in the video below is quite interesting. I think it's a whole different aspect of aerial photography, flying at night, that is worth exploring further. |
