This aerial video is of the ruins of an abbey about 20 miles away from where I live. I've known about it for a while, and even written about it here: Byland Abbey, but I've never taken the time to have a good look at it. Yesterday I was driving rather aimlessly through the countryside with the intention of doing some aerial photography, but with no idea what I was going to shoot, when I saw a sign for Byland Abbey - so off I went. The Abbey is right on the edge of the Howardian Hills, which you can see in the video beyond the ruins, as well as the village of Coxwold which is worth a visit in itself. Unfortunately, when I got there the sun had been blotted out by clouds quite a bit so the images are not as bright as I'd hoped for, but I think the scenery is very pretty even under heavy clouds. The camera wobbles a bit in a couple of places, which I think is caused by me descending too quickly and making the whole hexacopters vibrate too much. You probably won't be able to tell from the video, but I had a bit of a panic moment when my video signal was lost when I dipped behind a tree - I quickly zoomed back up in the air and got the signal back, but it was a hairy moment. The video is being transmitted at 5.8 ghz, which does not travel through objects very well - such as buildings and dense trees and hedges - so bear this in mind if you're going to use this. With the above in mind, I'm thinkling of switching to 1.2 ghz for my video transmission, but having this beamed to a ground station and still using my Fatshark 5.8ghz goggles to recieve the tramission wirelessly from the ground station. |
